Loss of Appetite

Appetite tends to diminish as you age. To compensate, you have to come up with some little tricks to stimulate your desire to eat. Here are a few.

  • Find a calm, pleasant place for meals.
  • Go for simple, small recipes made with ingredients you like.
  • Have meals on a regular schedule.
  • Eat small meals and snacks.
  • Cut down on the amount of soup you eat at meals.
  • Room-temperature meals (like sandwiches) are best appreciated when you don’t have much of an appetite.
  • Making meals that give off odors as they simmer (such as soup and broths) can also stimulate your appetite.
  • Keep some commercially prepared foods or meals that call for little preparation on hand for the times when you don’t feel like cooking.
  • Offer yourself colorful dishes (a variety of fruit and vegetables). Appetite begins as a visual experience.
  • Eat with friends, if possible.
  • Take a walk before meals.

You can also have 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones. If your appetite diminishes significantly, consult a nutritionist to ensure that you are eating enough to meet your needs.
