Nutrition and the Elderly

Eating right is very important at every stage of life. Since appetite often tends to diminish as we grow older, sound dietary decisions are needed to maintain energy and health.

Metabolism also decreases as a part of the normal aging process. In other words, your body expends less energy in carrying out your activities. As a result, most elderly people should opt for the minimum number of servings suggested for most of the food groups in Canada's Food Guide. Rely on your appetite: it’s a good guide !
