Introduction to a Healthy Diet

Is eating a healthy diet complicated? And just what does eating a healthy diet mean? First of all, a healthy diet is a varied diet. Balance is the next concern: nutritional balance between foods and balance between the food eaten and energy expended. Don’t forget about the enjoyment associated with sharing a meal with family or friends.

Enjoyment + balance + variety = healthy diet

So, it’s a question of enjoying eating a variety of nutritious foods. A varied diet consists of foods of different colors, textures, and flavors. Every meal should also include foods from the four groups in Canada’s Food Guide.

A healthy diet is important because it can reduce the risk of diseases that can be modified by diet, such as cardiovascular disease and obesity.
