A word from the Director
Almost everyone knows someone at work or in their family or neighborhood who suffers from mental illness. Mental illness is very common. In fact, the World Health Organization predicts that within a few years it will be the second leading cause of distress and disability after heart disease. Yet, most people know very little about mental illness. It frightens them—and fear breeds prejudice.
Information is our most effective tool against prejudice. This is why I am especially proud to introduce this website, which aims to provide clear and useful information on mental health, as well as mental illness and the means we have to deal with it.
As a clinical psychiatrist and the director of mental health at Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux , it is very important for me to know that people suffering from mental illness can find a place in society where they can fulfill their potential and participate fully as citizens. This is the path to recovery, and its goal.
