World AIDS Day 2008 Edition

Judging spreads AIDS
2008 World Aids Day  “The less we judge a man who has sexual relations with another man, the more we help."

Distribution of the 2008 World AIDS Day poster begun during the third week of October. As usual, posters will be sent to partners in the health and social services network and to community organizations involved in the fight against AIDS.

To mark World Aids Day on 1 December 2008, the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) has chosen to inform the Québec population about needs of men who have sex with men (MSM) so they can have better support to avoid contracting or transmitting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

Québec’s adult population still shows signs of homophobia. Discrimination and ostracism towards men who have sex with men act as barriers that can inhibit these men from caring for their health and adopting safer behaviours to prevent HIV. Negative attitudes towards MSM have an impact on their self-esteem, which can diminish interest in their own sexual health.

To start the campaign, on the third week of october, a poster (in French and English) is distributed in the health and social services network, and to community organisations, detention centres, colleges and universities. A message addressed to the province’s population will also be included in major Québec dailies on 1 December 2008. In addition, the MSSS will contact various media in Québec to draw attention to World AIDS Day.

By fighting prejudices against men who have sex with men, we’re also fighting the spread of HIV.
