For women suffering from irregular ovarian function (absent, abnormal, or suboptimal ovulation), the first choice for treatment is medication that assists or stimulates ovulation.
There are two main categories of ovarian stimulation medications. Clomiphene citrate acts by increasing the levels of two hormones: follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulates the ovaries, and luteinizing hormone (LH), which is responsible for the liberation of the ovum (ovulation). Gonadotropins modify the ovulation process, generally by imitating the hormones responsible for the production of ova.
