Blood and Urine Newborn Screening

Blood and Urine Newborn Screening

Description

Newborn screening enables the detection of certain rare, but serious diseases. These diseases may be present at birth even if they are not yet apparent. The purpose of screening is to be able to treat children who need it, prior to the appearance of symptoms. Early treatment may help avoid serious, permanent complications for the child.

Two screening tests are available for all Québec babies:

  • A test based on a blood specimen taken at birth
  • A test based on a urine specimen taken at 21 days from birth

Eligibility

Blood and urine screening tests are provided at no cost for all Québec newborns who qualify for the Québec Health Insurance Plan.

Babies born outside Québec may also benefit from screening if prescribed by a physician, and this must take place as soon as possible after birth.
